Summer craft ideas for the kids

Keep kids of all ages engaged and away from phones and tablets this season with these fun craft projects that everyone can get involved in.

With summer holiday upon us, you’ll want the kids to stay outdoors and breath in that fresh air. However, thinking of fun activities for all ages to enjoy is more difficult than you may think. We take a look at some of the best ideas to keep them entertained this season.

  1. Use paint pens to decorate that British summer staple - the humble Wellington boot, or why not grab a pair of canvas shoes and get personalising? You can be as ornate or simple as you like, just spray your wellies with varnish (in a well-ventilated area) once you're done or pop an iron the inside your canvas boots (taking care to avoid any plastic areas) to seal in your designs.
  2. Invest in some paint and canvas pencil cases and allow your little ones to decorate their own items.
  3. Using paint and plain clothing, create your own tie-dye fashion.
  4. Keep it simple with a stack of cards and get the kids to design beautiful year-round greetings for friends and family.
  5. Shelter from the sun in a teepee hideout! Create a cool, comfy space for your children to play and have fun. Perfect for reading, playing and creating, your little one will escape into a world of their own imagination.
  6. Bubble painting is a fascinating crafty activity for kids, which produces different results every time. It can be a bit messy though which is why it makes for a great outdoor summer activity! Mix together the paint and some washing up liquid in the tray. Add some water until it is runny enough to blow bubbles. Use the drinking straw to blow into the paint to make bubbles. Gently place the paper on top of the bubbles. When the bubbles pop, remove the paper and leave to dry.
  7. Take advantage of a glorious summer day to combine a craft and outdoor activity in one by having a boat race! Use old mushroom boxes, lollipop sticks and milk cartons plus more to create your very own ships and then race them in a paddling pool. And if the sun isn't shining, you could always use the bath tub!
  8. Build a back-garden obstacle course using hula hoops, jump ropes, and even a hose. Then time the kids.
  9. Have a garden party. When it’s summer, you don’t need a reason to party so invite all the kid’s friends round. Your children can decorate the outside space, create invites and plan games. Plus, it doesn’t matter if drinks get spilled because it’ll be on the grass.
