Feng Shui: A Beginners Guide

Feng Shui: A Beginners Guide

Feng Shui is an ancient practice that evolved from the East, and is designed to bring balance to our environment by following specific rules.

The principles of opposites, yin and yang and the elements of fire, earth, water, wind and metal combine to create a set of principles that help with interior designing including colour and furniture placement to ensure that your home is comfortable and prosperous. Feng Shui places a lot of importance on energy flow and ensures that there are no blocks cause by bad placement or negative energy.

Simple Cures

Within the practice of Feng Shui, there are some simple remedies on offer to cure any issues with the flow of energy and ensure that things are turned positive rather than negative. Mirrors can be used to encourage the correct flow of energy and stop energy circulating where it shouldn’t. Water brings movement and life, so things like water features and aquariums are used to lift and generate positive energy in any space. Finally, crystals are a great way to close any gaps in energy flow and encourage the sunlight into the home.

Bedroom Placement

A key room to work on if you are just starting out with Feng Shui is the bedroom. The placement of the bed both on the compass points and in relation to the door is essential to ensure that you are resting well without threat. A bed should never be placed with the feet pointing out of the door as this represents the coffin being carried out at the end of life. You should not sleep with your reflection on show either as this is considered a negative placement. Mirrors should be higher than the bed or sited to avoid a view from the bed.  If this is unavoidable, you should sleep alongside a mirror rather than pointing into it. Finally if at all possible the bed should be placed against a solid wall, never out in the middle of the room.

Colour Magic

Colour plays a very important role in Feng Shui. You should aim to decorate in the colours that will best benefit the space. For example, yellow is a bright and uplifting colour making it perfect for kitchens but too stimulating for bedrooms, in this case, it could lead to poor sleep and anxiety as the brain cannot rest. Red is a good colour for adult bedrooms as it represents passion and can invigorate a relationship if you are looking for a partner a red bedroom can help with attracting romance into your life. Green is the colour of life and makes a perfect fit for living spaces as it is also calming. White is associated with new beginnings, and fresh starts so it makes the perfect colour for a first home or a new home moving on after a relationship breakdown. It is soothing and healing in nature. Blue is the colour of water and is perfect for bathroom decor; it can help create a tranquil bathing space for pampering and luxury.
